May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. (Galatians 6:14)
Those that wished to destroy Jesus decided that "it is expedient for you that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish." (John 11:50)
and by hanging Him high on a cross were attempting to make a mockery and heighten the hatred towards Him. In witnessing Him on the cross, the faith of His believers was strengthened. For many years after His death the cross was not associated with Christ because it was such horrible reminder of a terrifying act. However over time it became the symbol of His victory over death and sin. In lifting high the cross we say to world, God's love is so magnanimous that He sent His only Son so that we may have eternal life.
All Glory be to Him who died,
All honor to the Crucified,
Who lives and reigns eternally,
With Father, Spirit: One in Three
